Italy’s illegal online gambling market has grown into a €20 billion ($22.5 billion) shadow economy driven increasingly by smartphones, social media, and rapidly replicating “mirror sites”, despite one of Europe’s toughest gambling advertising bans.
According to a new report by Data Room Nexus Observatory, more than 4.5 million Italians accessed unauthorized gambling platforms. This growth is attributed to the ease of access provided by smartphones and social media, along with the proliferation of mirror sites that replicate the original platforms.
